Good Balance during Your Golf Swing Develops Consistency
By Mike Cooney, Director of Golf, Golden Ocala Golf & Equestrian Club
As a golfer, you understand the importance of proper movement – especially as it relates to your swing. And as a golfer, you know intuitively that your best golf swing comes when the ideal body balance is achieved. But what may not be apparent is what are the best fashions to make the movements required in golf easier and smoother.
Fashion changes over the years: new (or resurgent) hairstyles, different attire and different shoe styles. But successful golfers – of any era – understand that the relationship between good balance and good golf never changes.
The game’s top professional players – Rory McElroy, Jordan Spieth, Bernhard Langer and Colin Montgomerie – understand this element and make it developing sound balance a part of their practice schedule.
During the backswing of good players, body weight transfers to the inside of the right foot. Some players have said they feel as if the weight transfers to the inside of their right heel. During the downswing, body weight transfers to the outside (the target side) of the left foot.
During practice at the driving range, try focusing on how your weight transfers from right foot then back to your left foot. Focus on maintaining good balance throughout the swing.
While age, ability, fashion and trends may change over the years, maintaining correct balance is the one element that will consistently yield the best golf shots. And it doesn’t depend on your handicap.
The principles outlined above are suited for right-handed golfers. Switch the left-right terms for left-handed golfers.
