Preparing the Greens Each Day
Written by Jack Creveling, our Golf Course Superintendent.
At Golden Ocala, a lot goes into the preparation of the golf course greens before our members and their guests arrive for the first tee time. Take a look at our morning routine for getting the greens ready each day.
Mowing
First, the greens are mowed to remove the morning dew, as well as keep the grass at the desired length.
Rolling
Next, the greens are rolled the opposite direction they were mowed. This helps increase the rolling speed of the ball on the green, as well as provides a more firm and true surface.
Watering
Any areas requiring extra water, due to lack of rainfall or overnight irrigation, receive precision hand watering. This allows for more uniform conditions across the greens.
Clearing
The greens are then blown off to remove any remaining debris or clippings that come from the mowing, rolling and hand watering. This is a final detailed inspection of the Golden Ocala greens.
The Final Hole
Finally, the hole is cut on each green for golf play. Each hole at Golden Ocala is precisely measured using a pin sheet, which provides our members and guests with tournament conditions every day.
The plug removed from the green is placed where the hole was cut the day before. After placing the plug, we lightly top dress around the edge to better incorporate the grass and to reduce the time it will take to heal.
The cup is inserted into the new hole and the edge is painted to increase visibility. The flag is delicately placed in the hole and the green is then ready for play.
As you can see, preparing the greens each day at Golden Ocala is a precise and delicate process. Our team takes great pride in providing excellent greens and conditions year round to our members and guests.
