Winter Grass Mowing Patterns Add Visual Character

Written by Jack Creveling, our Golf Course Superintendent.

With the overseeded grass well established in the tee, fairway, and approach areas on the golf course, variation in mowing patterns allows the team at Golf Course Maintenance to show off the Rye grass’ ability to stripe following mowing.

Winter Grasses vs. Summer Grasses

Most winter grasses, including the Rye blend used here at Golden Ocala, have softer leaf texture than the summer grasses grown in Florida and, because of this, take to being laid over during mowing better. This allows for a striking visual contrast dependent on which direction we mow the grass.

When looking at striped grass, any lighter colored line was mowed away from your location and any darker colored line was mowed toward your location.

Which Look Do You Like?

The visual appeal is an important element of overseeding at Golden Ocala.  During spring months, you can expect us to use variety in our mowing patterns. Decide for yourself which you like best!
