What Are The Origins of Golf?

Golf has become one of the most popular and mainstream sports in American culture. Mark Twain spoofed it as “a good walk ruined,” but for many people, golf is a passion, a way to build relationships, get business transacted and get some much-needed exercise. How did it get to that level? What are the origins of golf?  Where did it start?

The Origins Of Golf

The origins of golf are somewhat murky. The game has its origins in early sports played with sticks and balls thousands of years ago. Evidence of these games can be seen both in Roman Europe and in China.

Many historians trace golf itself to 13th century Holland, where a game with sticks and a leather ball was played. As in modern golf, the object was to drive the ball hundreds of yards into the distance with a pre-designated target as the endpoint. Also like modern golf, the player with the lowest count of strokes was deemed the winner.

Scotland  lays undisputed claim to the origins of modern golf. The sport in its present form, with 18 holes, began there. Golf was so popular in Scotland that King James II banned it in 1457; it was too much of a distraction from military training. In spite of this ban, in time it recovered its prominence.

Golf In The UK And Its Colonies

The sport of golf became very popular in the United Kingdom in the 17th century. Later, as the British Empire began to spread across the globe, golf came with it. The British Open was first played in 1860, and that tournament has continued to present day.

Former British colonies are centers of golfing and have been for some time. The oldest permanent golf club in North America was founded in Montreal, Canada in 1873. The United States came later. The first permanent 18-hole golf course in the United States was founded in 1893.

Over the years, golf became a part of popular culture. Humorists Mark Twain and P.G. Wodehouse referenced it in their work. Golf is linked in the minds of the public to prominent professionals such as doctors, lawyers and financiers. More recently, figures such as Tiger Woods and Michelle Wie have inspired countless young people to learn the sport.
