Above-Ground Drains Help Protect Golf Bunkers

In the world of golf, stories abound of fanatical players determined to hit the greens: “Neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night, nor the winds of change, nor a nation challenged, will stay us from the swift completion of our appointed rounds. Ever!”

Actually, the line was referring to U.S. Postal Service workers and was used in a television commercial. (The U.S.P.S. doesn’t have an official motto.) But it may be fitting description of the passion of avid players who love the sport of golf.

We at Golden Ocala Golf & Equestrian Club’s Golf Course Maintenance would add one element to those unfortunate obstacles to a vigorous round of 18 holes – washed out bunkers. (Also known as sand traps.)

Heavy rains tend to washout bunkers, leaving exposed areas, which are unsightly and hamper a good game. Problem bunkers rank high on the list of golfers’ aggravations. While many golfers are certainly adept at assessing the condition of bunkers, most may not know why or how bunkers play a particular way.

We at Golden Ocala Golf & Equestrian Club’s Golf Maintenance focus on finding ways to make bunkers perform normally and traditionally – which is to serve as a hazard (or obstacle) to challenge golfers’ skill levels and abilities.

As sand-filled depressions, bunkers serve a sort of punitive purpose for players sending balls to wayward places. However, unkempt or unnatural bunkers become cruel and unusual punishment.

Golf Maintenance Takes Bunker Management Seriously

That’s why we at Golf Maintenance take the condition of the bunkers on our world-class course seriously. Our crews have spent the past few weeks installing above-ground drains designed to mitigate the impact of washouts. We have installed five fairway bunkers with drains connected into existing underground pipes.

But let us tell you about our golf course, which does include bunkers to challenge your abilities and to present you with the opportunity for developing a successful strategy – never mind snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night, nor the winds of change.

Golden Ocala Golf & Equestrian Club offers golfers the opportunity to play on an exciting 18-hole championship course designed by Ron Garl. The course recreates tribute holes from the some of the world’s finest courses including Augusta, Royal Troon, Baltusrol, Muirfield and St. Andrews.

We also present a 10-acre short game area with two practice holes and a driving game. Our Golf Shop sells clubs, clothing and most golf accessories from the game’s top names. Our acclaimed golf instructor John Elliot, Jr. and PGA professional instructors offer private lessons.
