Golf Tip: How to Overcome Nervous Habits

Written by Mike Cooney, Director of Golf.

Most golfers, when they get into pressure situations, will actually speed up their swing. As human beings, when we get nervous, we tend to get a little quicker when we talk, when we walk, and even when we swing the golf club. To help combat the natural nervousness that we can feel, a phrase that I love to use is to tell golfers to “enjoy the completion of your backswing.

How to Enjoy the Completion of Your Backswing

Allow your club to get to the top of your swing and just be patient. You don’t necessarily have to pause at the top, but remember that you have both the backswing and the downswing. Allow your club to reach the top, where you are resting it just over your right shoulder, and then go ahead and transition into your downswing.

Instead of being short and quick, think of your swing as long and smooth. Controlling your tempo is much easier with a slower swing. Try counting to yourself underneath your breath:

1 – 2 – 3 – HIT

You will be amazed at how your tempo will improve! Watch this video for a full explanation:

The transition of your swing is very important to generate power and accuracy. Follow these tips to help you transition smoothly from your backswing to your downswing. Once you master this fundamental, you will be one step closer to playing your perfect golf game!
