Strengthening Your Back Will Help Prevent Injuries
By Jeffrey T. Spaeth LMT CPT
Most of us will experience back problems sooner or later. As the summer approaches, our activity level will increase with trips to the beach, lake, spring and other destinations.
A great exercise for strengthening your back is to perform a plank move. Rest on your forearms, rise up on your toes and hold the position for 30 seconds focusing on keeping the core tight and work up to two minutes. This is a great workout for building up core strength, when you hold the plank while tightening your core, you can really feel that burn which strengthens your core muscles!
Another exercise is a straight leg raise. Lie on your back with your right knee bent keeping your left leg straight. Tighten your abs and raise your left leg 6 inches off the ground and then lower it back down slowly. Perform 10 to 15 reps then switch legs.
Another exercise is an arm and leg lift. Start on all fours and lift your left arm forward and right leg up off the ground and hold for five seconds, then alternate to right arm left leg. Perform 10 to 15 repetitions. These are just a few exercises to strengthen the lower back.
