Memorial Day: A Time for Fun, Family and Reflection

Many will choose to observe a portion of Memorial Day at a local parade or other events honoring the nation’s fallen service members. It’s a somber moment to reflect on their sacrifices and appreciate the American freedoms they defended.

Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, falls on the last Monday during the month of May. It’s typically also considered the unofficial start of the summer season.

The Memorial Day cookout is a tradition that many also enjoy as they celebrate the holiday off from work or school to spend time with friends and family. The day is usually planned around fun in the sun, at the pool or beach along with tons of great food.

We’re gearing up for the annual Memorial Day Barbecue here at Golden Ocala Golf & Equestrian Club on May 25th this year. The festivities start at 11 a.m. poolside at Café On The Green.

  • Bratwursts

On the side we have:

  • Coleslaw

And for dessert we’re serving an assortment of DeConna Ice Cream, a local favorite made in the area.

The event concludes at 3 p.m. just in time to participate in the National Moment of Remembrance, established by Congress in 2000 for the nation in unity to remember the fallen. As Moment of Remembrance founder Carmella LaSpada states: “It’s a way we can all help put the memorial back in Memorial Day.
