Giving is the ultimate expression of who we should be and of what we can become. President Abraham Lincoln in his first inaugural address referred to that part in each of us as “touched … by the better angels of our nature.”

That’s the life the late Don Harrison attempted to live. As a Marine, Harrison was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. He was also a Master Mason and a Shriner. He expressed his life as a giver; his favorite charities included the Shriner Children’s Hospital, Marion County Veterans Helping Veterans and the Ocala Symphony Orchestra.

Harrison’s vision was to establish an organization that would work with and support local charity organizations to build a stronger, healthier community.

Tournaments Will Support Local Charities

In recognition of his honor and charity, Golden Ocala Golf & Equestrian Club is hosting the Don Harrison Tournaments for tennis and golf to help support the Don Harrison Foundation.

The Tennis Tournament is March 6. Registration is 8 – 9 a.m. at Golden Ocala Golf & Equestrian Club. Entry fee is $150 per team and $75 for individuals. Fee includes tennis, box lunch, reception, appetizers, silent auction and cash bar. The tournament’s goal is “to carry on Don Harrison’s legacy for providing assistance to local Marion County and surrounding areas.”

The golf tournament is March 7. Registration and shotgun start is 8 – 9 a.m. at Golden Ocala Golf & Equestrian Club. Entry fee is $150 (unless the fee is included in the sponsorship). That includes green and cart fees, range balls, reception, appetizers, silent auction and cash bar. Teams of singles and doubles may register and will be put into foursomes. The tournament format is 4-person scramble. Tournament officials will assign scramble members if players don’t already have a team.

Sponsorship donations include listing in the event’s program. Sponsorships include:

• General and General include a personalized memento for the event donation.
• General includes a twosome registration, and General includes a foursome registration.
• General – A $5,000 donation.
• General – A $3,000 donation.
• General – A $1,000 donation.
• General – A $500 donation.
• Colonel – A $250 donation.
• Colonel – A $150 donation.
• Hole sponsorship donation for the tournament is $100.
