Safety Tips for Summer Horseback Riding

The joy of summer horseback riding is one of life’s simple pleasures. Lush landscapes, a spirited horse and beautiful sunshine fill your senses and give you a feeling of fulfillment and peace. Summers in Florida are hot, so to ensure that your recreational horseback riding remains comfortable, it is important to take a few safety precautions for yourself and your horse.

The Heat and Humidity of Summer

Heat and humidity can be hard on both you and your horse; even a gentle trail ride during the heat of the day can cause heat stress. Horses tend to feel the effects of heat more quickly than humans, so if you feel warm, you can be certain that your horse feels it as well.

The Effect of Hot Weather on Horses and Humans

Like humans, horses rely on sweating to cool their bodies. The loss of both fluids and salts means that horses need frequent access to both during hot weather; plain water is not enough. This can be especially difficult in the early portion of the hot season because your horse has not yet had a chance to acclimate to the heat.

To ensure that you and your horse remain comfortable during summer horseback riding, we offer the following tips:

  • Watch your horse for any signs of heat stress during hot weather, such as excessive sweating or panting.
  • Build up endurance to hot weather very slowly; don’t go on a long ride during the first day of hot temperatures.
  • Choose to ride in the early morning or in the evenings when the sun is less intense and the air is cool.
  • Choose a shady ride among the trees so you and your horse can rest and relax away from the sun along the way.
  • Maintain access to water for both your horse and yourself.
  • Be prepared to cool your horse down with a water bath when your ride is complete or with any signs of heat stress.
