Stretching Improves Flexibility, Helps Prevent Injuries

By Jeffrey T Spaeth LMT, CPT

Stretching improves flexibility which is very important for our joints and muscles, it also improves our balance and coordination which decreases as we grow older.

Before you work out you should warm up for at least five minutes and stretch each major body part for at least 60 seconds. Be careful not to stretch to the point of pain, just when you feel the muscle getting tight. If you suffer from a muscle strain or ligament sprain, wait to stretch the affected area until after it is healed.

Stretching also improves your posture which in turn will improve your overall sense of well being by increasing blood flow and nerve transmissions. Avoid bouncing when stretching; this can lead to injury.

Stretching can also relieve stress. When we feel stress, our muscles tighten up, which restricts blood flow. Joints become ridged which also restricts our range of motion.
