Here Are Helpful Ways to Stay Hydrated at Golden Ocala

By Jeffrey T. Spaeth LMT CPT

With the summer fast approaching, it’s very important to stay hydrated. Factors that lead to dehydration are prolonged exposure to high temperatures, time in the direct sun and, you may not be aware of this, but high humidity is also a factor. Outdoor activities such as tennis, golf and running can lead to dehydration without the proper fluid intake. Symptoms of dehydration include feeling thirsty, a dry mouth, not going to the bathroom much, dry skin, headache and muscle cramps.

So, how do you stay hydrated at Golden Ocala Golf & Equestrian Club and everywhere else in the Sunshine State?

Your body is made up of around 70 percent fluids. Lack of water can result in poor athletic performance and fatigue. Foods you eat can help to rehydrate you as well. Watermelon is 90 percent water. Oranges, grapefruit and other types of melons can contribute to fluid intake as well. Great news for coffee drinkers: the newest studies can confirm that coffee and tea are good sources of fluids and will not offset hydration.

Pedialyte Helps Adults Too

Something you may not have thought of is to drink Pedialyte. That’s right; the drink you give your kids when they are not feeling well. Pedialyte is formatted to help replenish vital minerals and nutrients. It replaces sodium and potassium. During sports activities try to drink 4-6 ounces every 15-20 minutes. Working out for over an hour? Drink 16 ounces.

According to the BBC News, “research revealed that one in five seniors are not getting enough water.” Research states that nearly 95 percent of the elderly are in some stage of dehydration. “Aging causes people to lose their sense of thirst,” BBC reports.

Dr. Gerald Pollack, one of the world’s leading researchers on the physics of water, espouses consumption of “living water” (spring water). Pollack said it is the same type of water in human cells. “It carries a negative charge and works like a battery by holding and delivering energy.”

Studies show that 50 percent of all diseases could be prevented by staying hydrated! So drink an adequate supply of water and remember if you’re thirsty, dehydration has already set in.
