What Is Your Tennis String Type

Written By Thiroshan Chetty, Director of Tennis

Tennis strings come in all shapes, sizes and colors. It’s helpful to understand the performance of each string type in a racket and how they suit a player’s style.

There are four groups of strings which include natural gut, multifilament synthetics, polyester and synthetic gut.

There are four types of string for tennis rackets including natural gut, multifilament string, polyester, and synthetic gut.

I like to explain the four groups so that players can pick up a racket and find the string that helps them improve their tennis game.

Natural gut: is the premier string on the tennis court. It provides a softer feel and is more forgiving at contact of the ball. It should be noted that natural gut is the most expensive string on the market.

Multifilament string: provides great playability while being very soft on the arm. This is a great string if you’re looking for power and control in an arm friendly environment.

Polyester: is in the durability category. This is the choice for many hard hitters and string breakers. If you have arm trouble this is a category to avoid.

Synthetic gut: an all- around string. These are the most basic and popular strings on the market. Synthetics provide decent durability as well as maintain tension. This is a great string for players looking for power and control.
