Tennis Court Maintenance: On The Clay

Written By Thiroshan Chetty, Director of Tennis

First-timers to the Golden Ocala tennis courts always mention the quality of the courts and how beautiful they look. It’s a compliment we take great pride in as we strive to keep the courts in excellent shape.

Court maintenance is a rigorous task that requires careful planning and execution.  Our court maintenance specialists John Keogh and Steven Dohora begin their day at 5:30 a.m in preparation for the days play.

Our six tennis courts are supported by a hydro-grid watering system that enables the courts to be watered below the surface. This allows for member play all day long with no breaks in play. However, constant adjustments are made during each season to control the amount of water each court receives over the course of a year. This keeps our courts from getting too moist or too dry.

At least once a quarter, new clay is added to the surface to keep our courts at peak play. Some of the areas of concern are algae, fungus, and calcium buildup. A daily dose of chemicals as well scarification helps to keep these court concerns away.

Aside from the courts being maintained, other areas of the facility has to be maintained as well. This includes nets being adjusted, water coolers being filled daily with filtered water and weed control. Come join us for the Marion Tennis Masters and see the best tennis courts in the region.
