Hydration – The Heat Is On

Written By Jeffrey T. Spaeth, L.M.T., C.P.T.

With summer fast approaching, it is very important to stay hydrated, especially while you are working out.

Adults should drink eight, 8-ounce glasses of water each day. That’s a total of 64-ounces of water, or a half-gallon. Just think of 64-ounces as two of the big 32-ounce cups! According to the experts at the Mays Clinic, the way to determine the correct amount of water to drink each day is to divide your body weight in half and use that number in ounces.

Water Intake

You want to make sure to intake  enough water in order to not become dehydrated.

The first sign of dehydration is a head-achy feeling at the end of the day. Don’t wait to get thirsty to drink water. By the time you feel the symptoms, you’ve already lost approximately two or more cups of body fluid. The body usually loses around 10 cups of fluid per a day in exhaled air, perspiration and other body secretions. The average adult male body is 60 percent water, while the average adult female body is 55 percent water.

Other Options

When choosing a sport drink, make sure it is low in sugar. Too much sugar can make your body acidic and rob you of electrolytes. Believe it or not, raw organic young green coconut water is the best choice for re-hydration. It supplies your body with essential amino acids and carbohydrates along with electrolytes that enable better absorption into the blood stream.
