High Repetitions with Low Weights Can Build Muscle

Written by Jeffrey T Spaeth, L.M.T, C.P.T.

A common misnomer in the exercise world is you can only build your muscles using heavy weights with low repetitions. There have been studies conducted that show using light weights to the point of muscle fatigue can build muscle mass. This type of weight training can also shape and tone your muscles. High repetitions with low weights is the weight training technique I recommend to most of those wishing to build muscle mass in size, shape and tone.

Weights

High repetitions and low weights can give you the muscle mass and tone you desire.

Ideal Candidates for this Weight Training

Dr. Jordan Metzl, a sports doctor at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, prefers this type of weight training especially for those recovering from an injury. He encourages athletes with injuries to use this type of training to help build muscle around any damaged ligaments or joints to improve their overall performance. This type of training is also very helpful for senior citizens.

Additional Weight Training Advice

Along with this type of weight training, another way to stimulate muscle growth is to mix up your workouts. Increasing or decreasing your repetitions as you move through the different muscle groups will build and tone your muscle groups.

Make some time to stop by the Golden Ocala Fitness Center soon and I will illustrate the high rep, low weight technique. We can incorporate this training into your fitness program to give you the strength and muscle tone you have always wanted. For more information on fitness and health, visit our fitness blog.
