The Benefits of Exercising in the Water

WRITTEN BY LINDA DOYLE, PERSONAL TRAINER

We are all aware that exercise is an important part of life and that each of us should take part in some form.  A key component is making exercise a part of our daily life, not just here and there; but truly a part of our daily lives. Many studies have shown that consistence is the key to success.

Fitness & Health

In a 2011 report from the Centers of Disease Control & Prevention, “regular physical activity is one of the most important things you can do for your health. It can help control your weight, reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, reduce your risk of Type 2 Diabetes and metabolic syndrome, reduce your risk of some cancers, strengthen your bones and muscles, improve your mental health and mood, improve your ability to do daily  activities, prevent falls and if you are an older adult increase your life span.”

Aquatic Workout

Golden Ocala is always looking for ways to better serve members and improving your health is at the top of the list. The Fitness Center is scheduling a new water aerobics session which should be appealing to many of our members who are in need of regular physical activity but are not able to do strenuous activity due to health conditions ranging from heart problems to hip replacements.

Aquatic exercise is an alternative to land-based exercises. Here are just a few of the benefits of Aquatic Exercises:

  • Increase cardiovascular endurance with less excretion and physical demand
  • Allows individuals with the following complications to move more freely;
    • Range of motions
    • Joint stiffness
    • Arthritis
    • Joint pain
    • Excusive weight
    • Difficulty with more traditional exercises

Both land and aquatic exercises come with a list of benefits. The general rule of thumb is to NOT focus on what you can NOT do, but to refocus on what YOU CAN DO!

    Aquatic workouts offer many benefits.

    The Benefits:

The major benefit of exercising in the water is buoyancy, which reduces the amount of pressure or weight on joints making movement easier and more comfortable.  This is helpful for individuals with arthritis, those recovering from injury or surgery and those who are overweight.

Another benefit is viscosity, which is the resistance of water in response to body movement.  Using water as resistance is a great way to increase strength without using weights. The depth of the water and the speed of the movement all play a role in the benefit of the activity which can be controlled by the individual allowing this type of exercise to be customized. In 2013, the Greater Regional Medical Center in Iowa reported that our body responds to many stimulus and the temperature of the water helps to act as a heating pad, relaxing muscles and increasing blood flow to injured areas. Individuals with back pain, muscle spasms, joint stiffness and fibromyalgia find this to be very helpful.
