Everything in Moderation: Avoid Over Training

By Jeffrey T. Spaeth LMT, CPT

I’m sure you have heard the expression, “everything in moderation.” This saying can be applied to working out as well. Over training can cause lack of appetite, lack of progression, extreme fatigue and possible recurring injury.

The mind needs time to adjust to exercise. It takes time to adjust to a change in your day-to-day routine; that’s why so many people start an exercise program but wind up quitting.

If you’re just starting an exercise program, start slowly and don’t expect instant results; the fitness people you see on TV ads have trained for years. It’s what they do for a living.

Remember too much of a good thing can be bad. Too much aerobic training can be hard on your heart, as too much weight lifting could result in permanent injury to muscles and joints. On average, two days a week will be plenty to get the ball rolling.

A recent study by Copenhagen City Heart suggests exercising too much increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, heart attacks and weakened immune system and that light jogging a few times a week may be more beneficial than vigorous running and extend your life expectancy.
